Little Big Econ State Forest

 F-Troop revisits the Little Big Econ to build a new “puncheon” style boardwalk. This is the last step needed to open up a new section of trail that will be a huge connector and keep hikers off of the road. Come out and see why this has been such a favorite location for the F-Troop to work and play. We may also go check out some of the bridges to make minor adjustments and repairs. Training will include a hands on workshop in boardwalk design & construction.

February 21st - 24th
Econfina Creek Wildlife Management Area
Suspension bridge construction

The first of two suspension bridges over Econfina Creek is slated for construction this season. Ian Barlow will be back to lead us through this technically challenging project which will include training on rigging equipment and techniques. This is the project many of us have been waiting for so be sure to register early.The project will be funded be a generous grant from the Office of Greenways & Trails.

March 9th-14th
Big Cypress National Preserve
Wilderness trail maintenance

One of the crown jewels of the Florida Trail, the trail through Big Cypress leads hikers deep into wild Florida. The crew will spend 4 days hiking from one end to the other in a supported thru-hike while maintaining the trail. We will join forces with students from Florida State University, Hawking College, and the American Hiking Society as part of their Alternative Spring Break. Training will include a workshop in Leave No Trace ethics.

April 12th-13th
Little Manatee River State Park
New boardwalk construction

 The Little Manatee River has been designated an Outstanding Florida Water and is part of the Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve. There are 6 ½ miles of hiking trails that were created and maintained by volunteers from the FTA Suncoast Chapter. The trail is part of the Florida Trail System but is not connected to the main National Scenic Trail. The crew will be working on a section of boardwalk that is in need of replacement. This project is sponsored in part by a grant from the American Hiking Society with additional support from the Florida State Parks.
